Cut the Wire

Cut the Wire - Jina Wallwork
She can see every twist in the conversation. She is the invisible peacekeeper whose gifts are underestimated. She can envisage each fight before it is allowed to form. Some conversations touch the pain of others and critical words can lead to ruptures. Each word becomes explosive and dangerous, but each has been fully observed by her penetrating gaze. An argument can be diffused before it occurs. She is the bomb disposal expert who cuts the wire before flames are allowed to fill the air. She has steered the conversation without any use of aggression; she has skillfully changed the tone and content. There will be no arguments today, because a conflict will not solve these difficulties. Heated voices will increase the size of the problem and push the solution further out of reach. She has chosen peace for today, because tomorrow may introduce a resolution.

Golden Tickets

Golden Tickets - Jina Wallwork
You desire more help and assistance, so you invest in a possible future and cling to a ticket that could be gold. The statistics are against you, but there is a small chance. It allows you to imagine a circumstance that is alien to you. It is a chance to enjoy a fantasy and relieve the stress of the day. Someone will win, but most people will lose. Investing in a dream will make it feel more tangible. You don’t realize your own importance or value.

Don’t invest in a dream; invest in yourself through education and tools. You will discover that you are far more capable of anything you could have imagined. Trust that you can build your own future. Take practical steps towards a dream and it will open your life to greater possibilities. You are the key; you are the golden ticket.

The Red Sea

The Red Sea - Jina Wallwork
She has never taken the time to discover who I really am. I am the red sea. Her lack of knowledge feeds her imagination and she presumes the water is red and the label is accurate. I want her to swim in my waters and understand me at every depth, but I don't fill her with the adventurous spirit that is required. I am not the journey she wishes to take. She stands at a distance and imagines that her eyes are open.

A Remote Mountain

A Remote Mountain - Jina Wallwork
It is often difficult to understand your loved ones. When you choose a difficult road you expect them to stand by your side. You want them to show encouragement and support. As the obstacles become greater you sense that you are alone. It may seem as though the connection between you isn't strong enough; their love too shallow to watch over your endeavors. It is so easy to misunderstand the size of another person’s love. If you share your journey then you reveal every pain and sorrow. They want to stand close as you struggle through every failure, but it becomes too painful to watch. They attempt to steer you in another direction, because they want your life to be easier and they want to see you smile. They share your struggle, because they love you. They cry at your sadness and feel your frustration while hiding their worries from your heavy heart. There is no path they will not travel, because you are bound together. When you understand this, you can stand on a remote mountain and still feel the presence of your most profound connections.

Carrying the Light

Carrying the Light - Jina Wallwork
It is deep within that I find the light of my soul. I want to show it to those around me, but I don’t know how. They cannot see even a glimmer beyond this flesh. I want to build connections that exist beyond the superficial. I am not this body; I am the spirit at the core of my being. I want to convert this light into words and imagery so it can become visible to others. A body disguises what is real and important. I want to share my light and bathe in the beautiful light of others. I want deep and honest connections with other people, because we are not just skin and bone.

The Seated Demon

The Seated Demon (after Mikhail Vrubel)
As the world burns he is overwhelmed by a sense of calm. It is finally over. The change has occurred and his freedom is now assured. The confines of this relationship have suffocated all his passion and joy. The prison sentence has been long and undeserved. He condemned himself with every false apology. He never understood why the words were requested, but recognized they were needed to obtain a transient peace. There is no love within her tearful screams; there is no love within this argument.

There was once a belief that small alterations could make this relationship work. He would eagerly accept the responsibility of fixing what was never whole. It is time to let go. He listens to her complaints and accepts his role as the evil demon. The blame feels light on his shoulders, because they are kissed by the warm breeze of freedom. He listens to the sound of her voice, but doesn't hear her words. He is no longer present within the relationship. He is alone watching the sunset without a care for tomorrow. He has finally escaped. They are both free.

Diamond - Jina Wallwork

We all have our own personal struggle. The world unleashes hardship and we are changed by the journey we travel. We find hidden resources deep within us and it allows us to carry on. We become strong and beautiful, like a diamond forged by external pressures.

In times of difficulty we become angry and frustrated. It is hard to see the beauty of a lesson until it has been overcome. In hindsight, we can see how our personal struggle allowed us to recognize our own strength and beauty. The rich colors of life become more visible as time passes by. Lessons are a gift that is disguised as a nightmare. Eventually we open our eyes and see them for what they really are.

Competitive Strategy

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU)
Competitive Strategy,2013

I recently completed the Competitive Strategy course from LMU. I received a statement of accomplishment with distinction. This course was made available through the Coursera platform. It is a great place to find courses from many different universities.

The course was really enjoyable, full of real world examples. I'm just starting an economics module as part of my degree and it made me feel less nervous and more excited.

The Trailblazer

The Trailblazer - Jina Wallwork
He overcame every obstacle. Impossibility has become void of all meaning, because a path has been forged by the intensity of his own personal vision. He runs through the landscape shaping it to accommodate his own journey. I watch with amazement stunned by his capacity to succeed in such a hostile environment.

There is a pathway now open and I hesitate as I consider all that I have seen. I didn't know the world could allow space for such an achievement. It shakes my understanding and I feel refreshed. The path he has opened has become crowded. They stand impatient and frustrated and it breeds hostility. There is no space to walk this path, because it belongs only to him.

I can see the fire burning within him. There is a passion that has overwhelmed any difficulties. I don’t need his path and I don’t need his fire, because I have my own. The greatest gift a trailblazer can deliver is a reminder of your own fire and the inspiration to ignite.

Art and Inquiry

MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)
Art and Inquiry: Museum Teaching Strategies For Your Classroom, 2013

I'm not a teacher but this course made me incredibly curious. I've studied with the MoMA before and was really impressed. This course was made available for free through the Coursera platform.

I decided to take participate in the course for a number of different reasons. I have never completely ruled out the idea of teaching art in some capacity. secondly, I think its important to understand how art is used in conversation; how is a visual language developed and understood. Also, I wanted to know more about the MoMA, because I think its important for artists to understand how art galleries operate.

The course was thoroughly enjoyable. It showed how inquiry based teaching methods can encourage a greater dialogue. The technique uses open ended questions to explore peoples ideas and make them more comfortable in expressing them. It is a conversational tool and a learning tool. I have learned many new skills that could be adapted to a range of circumstances, not just classroom teaching. My grade was 95% I therefore received a 'Statement of accomplishment with distinction'.

A Day at the Beach

A Day at the Beach - Jina Wallwork
When your mind is filled with obstacles, you must take a moment to rest. Striving to succeed cannot occupy every minute. You may achieve everything your heart desires and more. The world could be delivered to your door wrapped in love and appreciation, but this will only make you happy if you define success as the admiration you receive from distant strangers. I would prefer a definition of success that includes the ability to maintain deep and heartfelt connections with those you love. Success is a feeling of gratitude for all that you have, it isn't a circumstance.

What is your life? Does it involve your own gratitude for all that you posses? Do you stop and enjoy the moment? Do you stop working in order to enjoy a day at the beach with those you love? Can you alter your plans to assist others in your life when they require comfort and compassion? What is the routine you have created for yourself? Does it allow space for enjoyment and love? Is this the life you want to live? Strive for success but place it in perspective.

Every Breath

With each breath life takes shape. Each moment will become a memory to cherish, regret or discard. Think of this moment as you breathe deep, because this experience will soon change. Both joy and sorrow will dance and one will lead as the other follows. They are constantly adapting to changes within the music of your journey.  Your history expands as you live. Inhale the experience and exhale the memory.

There were a few teething problems but I've finally sorted out the video. Sorry for the delay, I published it and then pulled it because it wasn't quite right. I learn more with each mistake I make. It is the nature of the process. I hope that you enjoy it.

Everything is a learning process and I'm starting to make better videos. Compare the difference between the video above and my first video below. Both are about the book 'Vision', but the one above is a giant leap
forward. I have created a new youtube channel because of the change and to enable greater Google+ integration. The channel can be found through the video above or through my Google+ page +Jina Wallwork .

Sleep - Jina Wallwork
I empty my consciousness into a vessel of exhaustion. It waits for me, unaware of the distance. I am lost to the river. My body is weightless and I am lifted beyond this shell. I drift away from my sense of self only to discover something more, as I sink deeper into a new truth. It is a world I may or may not remember. This dream contains fragments of self knowledge, but it speaks in a language that is unique to the dreamer and I cannot be sure that is me. I want to remember every symbol and deliver each of them to my waiting consciousness. This world seems to be more than an illusion. I try to comprehend my location while I attempt to navigate this trembling dreamscape. I am controlled by the dream and I have no other choice, I must let go.

I'm So Green

I'm So Green - Jina Wallwork
My naivety delivers each dream. It allows the impossible to form within my mind. My ideas are not suffocated by past experience. I have not defined my reality with perceived restrictions. I love my beautiful naivety, because it encourages me to step forward and explore, while others hold back. They speak of how the world is and with each word they define their own truth. I look at the world with a smile, because I don’t know what’s possible and what isn't. I don’t need any guarantees for the decisions I make. People say that, ‘it can’t work’, ‘it’s stupid’ or ‘it’s impossible’. I watch each word mutate within the air and when they land on my ears they tell me, ‘it’s going to be difficult’. I’m not looking for comfort and security; I’m not looking for the easy road. I want to live and I want to know that I have tasted as much life as I possibly can. I’m happy to be the naive fool chasing impossible dreams; I’m happy to be so green.

Look Within

Look Within - Jina Wallwork

If you look for your greatest strength you will find only arrogance. If you attempt to discover your own weaknesses you will come to understand yourself. When you look within there are many illusions, because you do not hold a true perception of who you are. You have not tested your limitations and without this you cannot discover the truth. To risk failure is to push beyond what you believe you are capable of achieving. Failure is a gift, because it tells us that we are living on the edge of all our capabilities. It tells us that we are giving everything and our reward is self knowledge. Failure reveals your next step forward. When we push down these barriers, we grow beyond the skills we previously possessed. Failure is the pathway that leads to success.

The Party

The Party - Jina Wallwork

This would be a good time for a party. There doesn't need to be anything specific to celebrate, because we can find a reason. There is always something in your life that is wonderful, but you don’t assign a moment to appreciate its magic. You should be filled with gratitude and pure joy, but your blessings have become a part of the everyday. In your life right now there are people who you love, and they love you to. Life will change and some things will be lost, but within this moment there is such beauty. There is always a reason to celebrate this day. If you can’t find a reason you’re not looking hard enough.

Chewing Gum

Chewing Gum - Jina Wallwork
Consider every word. You do not desire to enter this argument, but you are constantly provided with an invitation. Don’t allow these words to glide beyond your lips while exposing your wounds once more. Do not add more rage to this situation; do not add more strength to the cage that confines you. Contain your words within your mouth and chew them over. Think about their flavor before you spit them out. You don’t want an argument and this conversation is directed towards conflict. Will your words build bridges or condemn dreams. Listen to the words around you. They are filled with venom and hatred and demand that you speak in an equivalent manner. Are these the words you want to speak? Is this the behavior you want to emulate? Decide carefully and avoid regret. Don’t speak these words.

Mythical Being

Mythical Being - Jina Wallwork

When you find that mythical being please show them to me. I am not referring to dragons or unicorns. I am asking if you can locate a human being with an easy life. A quick glance could deceive you, but delve deeper and you will locate their pain and difficulties. You will find a set of lessons which are perfectly tailored to their own weaknesses. You will find tears, sadness and a personal struggle. Life is rich with love, happiness and sorrow. You cannot expect a life to contain only beauty and wonder. I don’t understand where your jealousy originates. You must believe you have located a mythical being.

Greener - Jina Wallwork

I can see your beautiful green grass. It camouflages the soil completely. I cannot see your sweat deep within the earth, because I wasn't present when you prepared your ground. I can only see these beautiful results. If I could see the dedication, perseverance and struggle, I would feel no jealousy. Instead, I only see a grass that is greener than my own. With a superficial glance I imagine that your results came with great ease. I cannot see the fallen tears within the soil, because I was not there when you were frustrated by your difficulties. I cannot see the sacrifices you have made; I am blind to your journey. I can only see this moment and the success you have obtained. You could explain the struggle but I wouldn't listen, because it would only irritate me further. It would sound like a complaint. You would seem ungrateful of all you have achieved, moaning about the slightest obstacle that you have now overcome. Whinging about something I have always desired, but will never have. It would make my jealousy so much larger. You cannot explain your process because I wouldn't understand. You cannot share your journey with me. Your life is better; your grass is greener.

Shock - Jina Wallwork

It is such a wonderful awakening. Stale ideas shake nervously into nothing, while accepting their fate. We perceive the truth of a situation and we begin the process of accommodating our newly obtained knowledge. Beliefs and illusions fall away, replaced by a higher awareness. A complete shift of perception leads us to a better understanding of what the world really is. We are blessed with an additional piece of the puzzle, because we have been touched by truth. Lies only reveal what you expect to hear, but truth is electric. It demands your attention and you cannot ignore the sensation of its presence. Lies will always lead to stagnation. Truth is an unstoppable force that changes everything.

The Claws of a Mountain

The Claws of a Mountain - Jina Wallwork

There are some challenges that invite our presence. We are tempted by the view from the peak of the mountain. It exists within our imagination and we seek the dream. As we begin the climb our hands grip firmly into the rock face, while we focus on the result of the climb.

The claws of the mountain scratch our skin and our muscles ache from the constant effort. Focusing on an imagined dream is not enough to sustain the momentum needed for this difficult journey. Many fantasies are discarded as the climber returns to the foot of the mountain.

The person who focuses on a dream will not attain great heights. It is the climber that will always travel the furthest. They continue despite all the scratches, you could imagine that they continue out of dedication to a final result. Instead, they persist because it is who they are; it is what they do. Outcomes are irrelevant because this is their life. The peak of the mountain is out of focus, because the climber is concentrating on the next piece of rock. They do not imagine the sights visible from the peak, because they are watching the view alter with every step. They do not wish to know the outcome; they want to know the mountain.

Connections - Jina Wallwork

All those friends that have come and gone, I have loved them all. There have been times when we faced the same lesson, and it guided us to share part of our journey. Those connections have changed over the years. Some were severed abruptly. Some threads were cut by death, others divided by arguments and conflict. Those were the friends I loved but didn't understand.

Other friendships gradually faded away. The threads that connected us stretched with the distance, they became strained and inflexible. The days do not contain enough hours to accommodate the presence of all those I have loved.  I cannot carry them along my path, because I know that we are travelling in different directions. It would be selfish to ask them to make space for me and my personal journey. I grieve that they are no longer part of my life. That feeling of loss and sadness, it reminds me that all is not lost. They are here within my memories. They are not physically at my side, but they are a part of me.

Connections is one of the images from Sketchbook 2012 which is currently touring as part of the sketchbook project visit for more information.

I - Jina Wallwork

Give me your eyes. I want to see life from your perspective, because I wish to understand you more completely. I want to feel your desires and assist you in your search for happiness. I want to know how you see the world. Tell me everything, and I will walk through the landscape of your mind and discover your reality. I want to hear your problems and search for solutions. I want to be a part of your inner world; I want to be a part of you.

I have your eyes. I know what you feel and everything you desire. I am lost within your inner world, isolated from my own perspective. My needs have been replaced by your own. I asked you to share your world, but you didn't make the same request. My world is camouflaged with silence. Between us there is not a true connection, because I have not retained all the pieces of my personality. I desire the space to be myself. This isn't something I should have to sacrifice.

Carried by the Wind

Carried by the Wind - Jina Wallwork

We cannot control everything. The plans we make can always be disrupted. We can prepare the soil with care and take many preparations but as we scatter the seeds across the ground, they can easily be blown off course. Carried by the wind, they may travel beyond our care. Hard work and dedication can sometimes lead to nothing. You cannot rely on a single seed to grow tall and bear fruit; do not gamble on the success of a single project. Create many avenues; plant many seeds. Some will fail and others will succeed, but it is a process that will always leads to a harvest.
